On June 14th there was an exchange between Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri, and Sen. Orin Hatch, R-Utah, during a Senate Finance Committee hearing. McCaskill, quite frustrated that the Senate version of the heathcare act was being discussed in secret and being pushed to an early July vote, asked Hatch why Democratic senators were being barred from discussion. Hatch immediately turned to a young aide and, with an open microphone, she could be heard coaching him on an answer. He then turned back to the committee and answered verbatim her words. He ended by saying “the Democrats are being briefed”!
I mention this because when my wife and I were visiting D.C. in the early 1980s, I showed her the Capitol and we watched the proceedings of the Senate floor. Hatch was speaking about healthcare as he was then chairman of the Health, Education, Labor Committee. Fast forward to 2017. Orin Hatch has been in the Senate since 1977, 40 years, and he is now 83 years old. In the above exchange he clearly seemed confused so the subject of some sort of dementia comes to my M.D. mind.
