Re “Denham wants pets given ticket to ride” (Page A1, Feb. 18): This article is a joke, right? The Bee is passing off silly legislation as important legislative work in an effort to make our representative appear ridiculous. Please tell me that The Bee doesn’t really consider this front-page news. Is it really that slow in the Valley?
Note to Rep. Denham: allowing pets on Amtrak trains will not increase ridership. If you knew anything about the difficulties facing rail transportation, you would know bringing your pet is not one of them. Here’s a suggestion: ride the rails between Washington, D.C., and Modesto instead of flying. Do it for a year. Then you will understand what Amtrak really needs.
I use Amtrak. I’ve ridden trains to Texas and Washington state. I know whereof I speak. Bringing a pet onboard is the last thing trains need.
For a Republican Congress pledging governance, there is precious little of that commodity to be had. But I get it. Passing feel-good legislation to take care of veterans and help distressed pet owners gives the illusion of doing something while more pressing issues are set aside and lawsuits against the president are offered up as meaningful legislation. I get it. I wish I didn’t.
