Lent begins Feb. 18. Many Christians give up or sacrifice something for Lent in the spirit of penance and self-denial. This year I’ve decided to give up my favorite fruits and vegetables – especially avocados, tomatoes and cucumbers grown in Mexico.
After reading in The Modesto Bee the Los Angeles Times article “Hardship on Mexican farms, bounty for U.S.” (Dec. 8, Page A1), I do not want to support the enslavement and extreme mistreatment of farm workers on Mexican farms. No more “Product of Mexico” produce on my table during Lent.
Maybe I will extend my Lenten sacrifice to a permanent boycott of Mexican produce until U.S. companies that distribute them commit to protect Mexican farm workers – not just U.S. consumers. Join me, even if you’re not a Christian. It won’t cost you a cent.
