I am the owner of a large-breed dog. She is people social but dog aggressive. That is, she doesn’t get along so well with other dogs.
We walk her every night, with her tags and a leash. I am careful to avoid places with a lot of dogs (dog parks, pet stores, etc.), because I am aware of her weaknesses.
In our walks, we have encountered many dogs who are “off leash.” Their owners will say that they are well trained and respond to every command. Except the off-leash dogs we’ve encountered charge at us and our dog, who is always on a leash. We are put in the position of having to put ourselves between our dog and the charging canine.
Please don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying that all off-leash dogs react this way. However, the variable is how your dog will react to a strange dog. The leash law exists for a reason. Please adhere to it for your dog’s safety as well as the safety of my pet.
