I cannot see why this book has caused so much controversy at Orestimba High School. The book does contain some offensive material, but not nearly enough to block the rest of the students' rights to read the book.
Step back and look at the situation. Your child is attending a public high school and hears language far worse than what was in the novel, and the majority of the kids attending the school do not go to church, so the parents have no room to complain about this coming-of-age novel. I understand that the parents have their own opinion of the novel, but if the parents have a problem, then they can consult the teacher and the child will be assigned a different book.
