This is in support of Donna Murphy, candidate for the Salida Sanitary District board. Donna has worked in the environmental field for 18 years. She graduated from California State University, Stanislaus, and has extensive education and experience in environmental compliance matters.
A little over a year ago, Salida residents received a notice of public hearing regarding doubling sanitary district rates. Members of the Salida Municipal Advisory Council attended the public hearing to ask questions. It soon became clear that the board didn't fully understand the issues. The legally required public hearing notice was inaccurate due to clerical errors.
We asked that the board postpone their vote until questions and clerical errors were dealt with. The board politely smiled and nodded as we spoke; they closed the public hearing and, without further discussion, voted to double our sewer rates. Our appearance was a total waste of time.
I was told by county counsel that there is no recourse for the public other than through the ballot box. I'm sure that current board members mean well -- but they see themselves as part of the sanitary district rather than our representatives.
This is our opportunity to elect a person who is up to the job.
