Retired teacher seeks Turlock mayor post

The race for mayor of Turlock has a new candidate, retired teacher Ed Brault, who says he’s only running to keep the Nov.4 election from being a one-candidate affair.

Retired teacher Ed Brault said Wednesday that he is running for mayor, merely to keep the Nov. 4 election from being a one-candidate affair.

Brault, 85, will challenge Gary Soiseth, who was the only candidate remaining after Mayor John Lazar announced Monday that he will not seek a third term.

“I just don’t think that anybody should run unopposed, because they automatically win,” Brault said.

He said he will not do any fundraising or campaigning, and he will drop out if another candidate emerges.

Soiseth, 29, is a water and energy policy adviser for the Modesto Irrigation District and has advised farmers in Afghanistan in partnership with the U.S. Army.
