A man fatally shot himself in a park outside Oakdale on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
The Stanislaus County coroner’s office confirmed the man was Brian Nelson, 45.
According to Oakdale police, officers were called to Kerr Park at 2:21 p.m. The park is owned by the city but located east of the city limit, Sgt. Joe Johnson said.
The park is adjacent to Oakdale Golf and Country Club, as well as the Oakdale Sportsmen’s Club, home to a recreational shooting organization.
Shooters at the club alerted police when they heard a gunshot from outside their facility, Johnson said. Officers arrived to find Nelson’s body near the basketball courts.
Nelson was the father of prominent Modesto Christian High School athletes Reeves and Raymond Nelson, who went on to attend UCLA. Reeves Nelson played basketball, and Raymond Nelson played football.
