Turlock Now: Helping homeless through art

New program helps homeless with art.

The non-profit We Care Program in Turlock is launching pilot program to help the homeless through art.

The new Homeless Engaged in Art (HEART) gives the homelessness an opportunity to express themselves through art. Organizers hope the creative expression will help participants process emotions, improve their mental health and enhance social skills. The plan is to also showcase the artwork in a public forum.

Art supplies are being collected now for the fledgling program, which begins this month. Drawing pencils, charcoal, pastels, erasers, drawing paper, paint paper, watercolor paints are all needed. To donate to We Care for HEART, contact Barbara at (209) 664-2003 or

Art sessions will be from 10 a.m. to noon the second and last Thursdays of the month in the shelter dining room at 213 S. Broadway.
