Alice N. Stroud, a longtime teacher honored when an elementary school in the Empire Union School District was named after her, died after a long illness Thursday in Modesto at the age of 89.
Alice Nadine Dorrel was born in Oyer, Mo., on Nov. 9, 1926, and moved to Waterford in 1946. Her first teaching job began in 1946 at Empire Elementary School. She taught several primary grades, was an active member of the Empire Teachers Association, served as a mentor and supervising teacher and was a reading specialist. She retired from the Empire district in 1987, but stayed active by volunteering. The school was named for her on her birthday in 1991.
She eloped with Lora L. Stroud on Dec. 26, 1948. He died in 1981. She is survived by son Stephen Stroud of Modesto, and daughters Susan Cardona of Whittier and Sherri Stroud of San Francisco, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 East Santa Fe Ave. in Hughson, from 1 p.m. until the funeral and reception at 7 at Empire Church of the Brethren, 5101 Yosemite Blvd., Modesto. Private burial to follow. The family requests contributions be made to the library (for books only) at Alice N. Stroud Elementary School, 815 Frazine Road, Modesto, CA 95357.
