Turlock Unified School District trustees will be asked to authorize an outside charter school in a rare early-morning meeting Monday at the district office.
The Aspiranet Fusion Charter School would serve 250 junior high and high school students now on independent study “due to challenging behaviors that make it difficult to function in a traditional school environment,” the charter application says.
The nonprofit Aspiranet also operates Excell Center, a residential treatment program, and two private schools, Stanislaus Academy and Valley Oaks School, in the Turlock area.
The proposed charter school would offer counseling and guidance, transitional work experience, sports, technology and the arts, along with academic courses. The charter would be on the grounds of Free Will Baptist Church on Geer Road.
Turlock Unified would get some oversight fees from the charter, which would be funded separately and operate independently. The Turlock district operates its own charter school, the eCademy, which serves students with teacher-supported online courses.
Trustees also will be asked to approve a contract with Turlock Chaplaincy Inc. to provide trained critical incidence management chaplains as needed on a volunteer basis. The chaplains must pass background checks.
The chaplains’ services would be “for emergency situations and for short-term supportive counseling,” the agenda states, for students, employees and families.
Board members also will be asked to approve a list of routine items, with the meeting expected to take 40 minutes.
