Read between the slimes

A lot of story time led to slime time Friday for kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Modesto Christian School. The students were given a reading challenge in March: Read a combined total of 10 million words by the end of the school year. The kids topped the goal by reading more than 11 million words, with 100 percent student participation, said Marisa Meeks, Modesto Christian’s dean of students and director of finance and development. To celebrate the accomplishment, the students got to “slime” Meeks, pictured above and bottom, and coach Robb Spencer, at right, at a schoolwide assembly. “The slime is green and gross,” said Meeks, adding that getting to douse her and Spencer with it was “very exciting for the students. We want to encourage students at a young age to read and learn to enjoy reading so they make it a lifelong achievement.”
