LearningQuest – Stanislaus Literacy Centers is seeking volunteers to meet the needs of 32 adults who have requested help with reading and need a literacy tutor.
For people interested in helping, the next tutor orientation and training will be June 5 and June 7. Both are offered at LearningQuest, 1032 11th St., Modesto.
The orientation is June 5 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The training is June 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is a $10 cost for training materials, but the fee can be waived if requested.
Tutors are asked to meet for a minimum of 90 minutes, twice a week, in a public location. The times and days depend upon the schedule of the volunteer, who will be matched with a student with similar availability.
Here are a few of the people waiting for a tutor:
• Man, 43, born in Texas. He attended school up to the 10th grade. He has two children and would like to set a good example for them. He is constantly looking for jobs, but not many places will hire a person without a GED or high school diploma, says Karen Williams, executive director of LearningQuest. This man struggles with basic reading and writing skills. He is motivated and willing to come any day and any time to get help from a tutor.
• Man, 22, born in Mexico. He moved to the United States when he was 10 and has lived all over the country. He attended at least seven schools and eventually dropped out of high school in the ninth grade because he was so far behind and was ridiculed for not knowing how to read. His past experiences in school are emotional for him, but he is ready to move on and begin improving his skills. He is eager to pass the GED test and would like to go to college and have a successful career.

LearningQuest partners with the Stanislaus County Library to provide literacy services for adults in Stanislaus County. Because of this partnership, more than 1,500 adults were tutored last year in reading, writing, math and English.
