Seventh- and eighth-graders competed for glory in five fields, with Ustach Middle School in north Modesto taking gold for both grades at the 10th annual Stanislaus County Junior High Academic Pentathlon.

The five-event competition tested pentathletes in the fields of literature, math, science, social science and essay writing. Like the Academic Decathlon for high school students, Pentathlon teams included a core group of nine students, three each in different grade-point categories.

The Ustach eighth-grade team and seventh-grade Black Team took firsts at the competition, which was held at Prescott Junior High in north Modesto on Saturday. Other high scorers in the eighth-grade competition were Prescott, in second, and Blaker-Kinser Junior High in Ceres, which took third.

In the seventh-grade contest, Turlock Junior High students placed second and Creekside Middle School in Patterson took third.
