Junior high spellers win Stanislaus County contest

Junior high spellers from north Modesto and Oakdale schools picked consonants with care, making it past ‘abattoir’ and ‘maladroitly’ to clench the Stanislaus County title.

Two junior high spellers picked consonants with care to make it past “abattoir” and “maladroitly” and clench the Stanislaus County championship.

Eighth-grader Terry Tek of Prescott Junior High in north Modesto and seventh-grader Samantha Victorio of Oakdale Junior High will represent the county at the state championship in San Rafael in May. Ryan Choeb of Cardozo Middle School in Riverbank will serve as alternate.

The three persevered to win the Junior High Spelling Championship on Thursday. Retired educator Harry Bakker served as spelling master and 18 volunteers were proctors. There were 19 schools represented by 35 spellers competing in the event sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education at the Petersen Event Center.
