Former Turlock High Principal Dana Salles Trevethan will take the reins of Turlock Unified as Superintendent Sonny Da Marto retires.
Trustees voted unanimously at a special board meeting Tuesday to appoint Trevethan as interim superintendent “with the hope and expectation that prior to the end of the 2015-16 school year, the district and Ms. Trevethan can agree to make Ms. Trevethan’s appointment permanent,” says a school district press release.
Da Marto announced he would retire at school year’s end at a board meeting earlier this month. Trevethan will officially assume the interim position July 1.
“Ms. Trevethan has the energy, vision and talent to lead our district to the next level,” said board of trustees president Frank Lima in a statement.
“She has the interpersonal skills and integrity to build relationships with all stakeholders, including students, parents, staff and community members, and she will remain committed to maintaining communication and collaborations with the city of Turlock and California State University, Stanislaus, where she has taught in the administrative credential program for a number of years,” he wrote.
Trevethan started at Turlock High as an English teacher and tennis coach, then served as principal for 11 years before moving to district office administration.
In her most recent role as assistant superintendent of educational services, Trevethan has spearheaded the district’s shift to Common Core State Standards over the past two years and overseen the development of budget priorities under the Local Control Accountability Plan.
“I am honored and elated, and frankly a little nervous, about leading from the very top,” Trevethan said in a district press release. “However, I am confident that when surrounded by a dedicated board, passionate staff and a supportive community, the task of putting students first, and staff a close second, will continue to guide our district.”
Before coming to the Turlock district more than 25 years ago, she worked as a middle school English teacher and athletic coach in Winton and Gustine.
