Sunnyvale man arrested on bomb, DUI charges near Sonora

California Highway Patrol officers called out the bomb squad and arrested a Sunnyvale man after a DUI stop revealed he had a homemade bomb, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers called out the bomb squad and arrested a Sunnyvale man after a DUI stop revealed he had a homemade bomb, authorities said.

According to the CHP, an officer stopped Michael Kevin Kline, 31, on Mono Way near Highway 108 at 9:57 p.m. Friday for a vehicle code violation.

Kline displayed “symptoms of impairment”, the CHP said in a news release. The officer arrested Kline on a charge of driving under the influence. When looking in Kline’s car, the officer found a homemade explosive device.

Authorities called out the Calaveras County Sheriff’s bomb squad, which took possession of the device.

Kline was booked into Tuolumne County Jail on charges of DUI, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a dangerous explosive device.
