A judge has scheduled a trial to start Feb. 3 for the former owner of a Modesto funeral home where deputies removed 17 bodies last year.

Shaun McGuire, owner of McGuire Cremation & Funeral Service, is charged with 17 misdemeanor counts of failing to register a death certificate.

In May 2013, Stanislaus County officials stopped issuing cremation and burial permits to McGuire after several complaints from clients about delays in cremating remains and processing paperwork. Customers reported problems getting death certificates and remains and reaching McGuire.

Those complaints also led to an investigation by the Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office.
