Stanislaus County law enforcement is looking for a woman believed to be targeting seniors, stealing their wallets while they are out shopping, Modesto Police reported Monday.
The woman is suspected in as many as eight wallet thefts in Turlock, including four last week, two thefts in Ceres and one in Modesto. She has been seen in surveillance footage using the victims’ credit cards at different stores.
Modesto Police spokeswoman Heather Graves said the woman is friendly with the victims, striking up conversations to distract them, then grabbing their wallets out of purses sitting in shopping carts.
The theft in Modesto occurred at the Dollar Tree on Oakdale Road July 22. The suspect used the victim’s credit card at three other locations that day, spending several hundred dollars.
The suspect is a heavyset black woman who wears glasses.
Anyone with information about the woman is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Tipsters can email through the Crime Stoppers website, www.stancrimetips.org, or text tips to CRIMES (274637) by typing “Tip704” plus a message. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
