Stanislaus County law enforcement officers are looking for a woman believed to be targeting seniors by stealing their wallets while they are out shopping, Modesto police reported Monday.
The woman is sought in as many as eight wallet thefts in Turlock, including four last week; two thefts in Ceres; and one in Modesto. She has been seen in surveillance footage using the victims’ credit cards at stores.
Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves said the woman is friendly with the victims, striking up conversations to distract them, then grabbing wallets out of purses left sitting in shopping carts.
The theft in Modesto occurred at the Dollar Tree on Oakdale Road on July 22. The woman used the victim’s credit card at three other locations that day, spending several hundred dollars.
Surveillance photos reveal she is a heavyset black woman who wears glasses.
Anyone with information about the woman is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Tipsters can email through the Crime Stoppers website, www.stancrimetips.org, or text tips to CRIMES (274637) by typing “Tip704” plus a message. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
