Modesto police catch machete-wielding man

Modesto police chased, searched for and eventually caught a man along Dry Creek Monday morning suspected of trying to cut a man with a machete in Moose Park.

Modesto police chased, searched for and eventually caught a man along Dry Creek on Monday morning who is suspected of trying to cut a man with a machete in Moose Park.

The victim told police the suspect, 42-year-old Casey Rodriguez, was trying to steal drugs from him that he denied having, said Modesto Police spokeswoman Heather Graves.

Rodriguez allegedly swung a machete at the victim, ripping his pants but not breaking skin.

Multiple officers responded to the park to search for Rodriguez; one officer borrowed a bicycle from a citizen to chase him through trails along Dry Creek, Grave said.

The suspect crossed the creek and eventually was located and apprehended in Kewin Park.

Rodriguez was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.
