Three police officers were assaulted while apprehending suspects in the past week.
The most recent incident occurred Wednesday just before 11 p.m. at the ampm convenience store in the 2000 block of west Main Street, said Turlock Police Department spokeswoman Mayra Lewis.
An officer was called to the store for a report of a man taking razors out of their package and concealing them in his clothes.
The officer attempted to stop the suspect as he was leaving the store but Lewis said the suspect tried to get past him.
A fight ensued, and the officer and the suspect fell to the ground. Robert Mendoza, 32, eventually was subdued and arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and theft.
Earlier in the day, an officer responded to Turlock Town Center in the 600 block of Golden State Boulevard after a security guard for the shopping center was assaulted and robbed.
The security guard was using his phone to videotape the suspect trespassing in the area, Lewis said, when the suspect punched him in the face and took his cellphone.
While interviewing the security guard, the police officer saw the suspect come out of a clothing store with the victim’s cellphone in hand, Lewis said.
The suspect failed to comply with the officer’s orders to surrender, so the officer moved to physically subdue him.
During the struggle, the suspect grabbed the officer’s groin in an effort to get away.
The officer didn’t let go and was able to handcuff and arrest Alberto Godinez, 23, on suspicion of robbery and assaulting a police officer, Lewis said.
On Saturday, another officer suffered injury to his groin when he was kicked from behind while trying to subdue a man for fighting at a bar.
The officer responded to the Red Brick Bar and Grill in downtown Turlock after two patrons, Hoeuy Hamm and Monceca Kloak, both 24, were kicked out for damaging property. The men were starting to fight with the bar’s security guard when the officer arrived, Lewis said.
As the officer was detaining Hamm, who’d just thrown a missed punch at the security guard, Kloak allegedly kicked him from behind in the groin.
Kloak was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, and Hamm was arrested for fighting.
“This seems to be an isolated week of assaults on officers, but we definitely hope this is not a new emerging trend happening in our area,” Lewis said.
