Man beaten with cane; Modesto police arrest 2

A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly cornering a man and beating him with a cane because of a marijuana debt.

A man and woman were arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly cornering a man and beating him with a cane because of a marijuana debt.

An officer in the area of Downey Avenue and Scenic Drive witnessed a woman use her car to block the victim at about 11 a.m. A man got out of the passenger seat and used a cane to beat the victim over the head, said Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves.

The officer broke up the fight and detained the suspects. He learned the male suspect, Starr Colter, 35, allegedly started the fight because the victim owed him money for marijuana.

Colter and 40-year-old Norma Graves, no relation to Heather Graves, were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy. The 42-year-old victim was treated at a hospital for a head injury and later released.
