A 51-year-old Sonora man suffered major injuries Thursday night when he lost control of a motorcycle and crashed on a rural road in Tuolumne County.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 p.m. on Springfield Road, just north of Highway 49 near the Columbia Airport. Michael Nute was driving a 1983 Yamaha motorcycle, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officers responded to a report of the motorcycle crash and were first to arrive and provide aid to Nute. He told the CHP that he was heading down the road at an unknown rate of speed when he applied the brakes, which caused the motorcycle to pull to the left.

Nute lost control of the motorcycle and it overturned. The CHP said Nute was ejected from the motorcycle, and he was not wearing a helmet. He suffered major injuries on his head, face, elbows, knees and lower back, according to the CHP. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
