A Los Banos man shot Monday after allegedly stabbing a police officer has died, authorities said.
According to Los Banos Police Cmdr. Ray Rayna Jr., officers were called to a home in the 600 block of Vine Street at about 3 p.m. The victim, an 80-year-old man, said his 43-year-old son had attacked him.
As the officer conducted an investigation, the son, whose name was not released, attacked the officer with a pair of scissors, stabbing him in the left arm. The officer, whose name also was not released, drew his gun. The officer and the suspect struggled for the gun. The officer fired twice, hitting the suspect in the left leg and the chest.
The suspect was airlifted to a Modesto hospital, where he died during surgery. The officer suffered a minor injury and was treated at Los Banos Memorial Hospital before being released. He is on paid administrative leave, standard practice in an officer-involved shooting.
Investigators ask anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Los Banos Police Department at (209) 827-7070.
