A 20-year-old woman from Patterson died Sunday after the car she was riding in left the road and overturned east of Patterson.
The driver was arrested on DUI and manslaughter charges. According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident was reported at 7:53 p.m. on Elm Avenue south of Almond Avenue.
The woman, whose name was not released pending notification of her family, was riding in a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Domingo Rodarte, 25, of Patterson. Rodarte made an abrupt turn — "for an unknown reason," the CHP said in a news release — and the car went off the road, hitting a dirt embankment.
The car went airborne and overturned several times before hitting a walnut tree and coming to rest. The woman who died was sitting in the right front passenger seat; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Rodarte and another passenger, Sandra Rodarte, 21, of Patterson suffered major injuries. Domingo Rodarte was taken to Doctors Medical for treatment and later booked on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter. Sandra Rodarte was taken to Memorial Medical Center.
