A bicyclist died after a car hit him early Monday near Riverbank, authorities said.
According to California Highway Patrol officer Aaron Keller, the male bicyclist, who had not been identified, was riding north on Terminal Avenue near Plainview Road when the accident happened at 4:35 a.m.
Kyle Massey, 21, of Riverbank was driving a 1993 Jeep Cherokee in the same direction when he saw the bicyclist.
“The gentleman at the last moment observed a bicyclist with no lights or reflectorized clothing directly in front of his vehicle,” Keller said. Massey tried to brake, but the right front of the Jeep hit the bicyclist, who was thrown from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene.
He was not wearing a helmet, Keller said. No citations have been issued, and authorities do not suspect drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.
