Suspect eludes police during Turlock search, but doesn't get away

Police arrested a man on several charges after a lengthy search that ended with him hiding in the rafters of a detached garage in Turlock, authorities said.

A man driving a stolen car managed to elude officers for several hours, but didn't get away completely, authorities said.

According to Turlock Police Sgt. Steve Webb, California Highway Patrol officers were following Scotty Rocha, 33, when he ran away about 3 p.m.

Officers from Turlock police, the California State University, Stanislaus police force and the Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force joined in the search, around the areas of West Main Street and Colorado, Berkeley and Hawkeye avenues.

They didn't find Rocha, but at 7:10 p.m. someone found the suspect hiding in a basement in the 1200 block of West Main Street.

Rocha ran again, Webb said, but officers found him hiding in the rafters of a detached garage on nearby Sierra Street.

Rocha was arrested on charges of auto theft, possession of methamphetamine and several outstanding warrants.
