A woman is in jail on suspicion of setting blazes last month along Dry Creek in Modesto after she approached firefighters at a medical call Tuesday afternoon and confessed.
Modesto Regional Fire Authority crews were providing medical aid to a bicyclist who had fallen at La Loma and El Rio avenues, about a block from Dry Creek, when Gwenda Colleen Campbell, 46, walked up to the scene.
She told firefighters she'd started several of the half-dozen fires along Dry Creek over the past month, according to Battalion Chief Hugo Patino. He said fire investigators believe that she is responsible for some but not all of the fires, such as one where teenagers were seen fleeing the scene.
The Dry Creek fires had firefighters concerned enough last month to start patrolling the area and handing out fliers to people along the bike trail, asking them to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

Modesto police were called to the scene Tuesday, and Campbell was arrested on suspicion of arson.
