A regional accountant for Wendy’s was arrested on suspicion of embezzling $80,000 from the company, authorities said.

Frank Martinez, 41, was taken into custody at the company’s Modesto office at 1308 Kansas Ave., early Thursday morning, according to Lt. Jolene Gonzales of the Modesto Police Department.

According to Gonzales, a corporate manager in Modesto received a call from a bank about an overdrawn account. At some point, the bank called back and said Martinez had “taken care of the account.”

The manager became suspicious and requested printouts of transactions over the last year. After looking over the statements, the manager called police.

Gonzales said Martinez is suspected of stealing the money over the last year and using it to pay off credit cards. He was booked into Stanislaus County Jail on a charge of embezzlement.

A woman reached at the Wendy’s office in Modesto said nobody there would comment on the case.
