A Ripon tax return preparer on Tuesday was arraigned in federal court in Sacramento on charges of assisting in preparing fraudulent returns, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
On Dec. 6, a grand jury returned with a 10-count indictment against 51-year-old Sarad Chand.
Prosecutors said Chand prepared tax returns under the name S. Chand Tax & Accounting Service Inc. and assisted clients in obtaining large refunds by falsifying deductions and credits on the returns. The false tax returns caused the government to lose millions of dollars in revenue in more than four years, federal attorneys say.
Chand pleaded not guilty and was released on $100,000 bail. The judge scheduled him to return to court Feb. 19. If convicted, Chand faces a maximum sentence of three years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
