Modesto police spent Thursday afternoon investigating what they classified as a "suspicious death" in a fourplex in the northeast part of the city.
Emergency responders received a medical aid call at 10:56 a.m. in the 2100 block of Oakdale Road. Neighbors found the woman who lived in the home dead, said Lt. Rick Armendariz.
Family members at the scene said the woman was 54. Her name was being withheld until after her autopsy, scheduled for this morning. Family members asked not to be identified.
When emergency personnel arrived, they found a window to the woman's home open and the screen on the ground.
At least a dozen officers and crime scene technicians responded to the scene. They searched the home, placed evidence placards, took photographs and interviewed the neighbors who said they found the woman.
An officer gave the 54-year-old woman's dog, Freddie, to grieving family members. They said they saw the woman alive Wednesday night. She had health problems, they said, but what made her death suspicious was that her television was missing.
Armendariz said there were no signs of foul play in regard to the woman's death, but police were waiting for the autopsy to determine if she died naturally or otherwise.
