A fight at a fast food restaurant here ended with an officer shooting a Ceres man after a chase.
Police identified the man shot early Friday as Martin Moreno, 28. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, and no officers were hurt.
According to police, the incident began at 2:11 a.m. when someone at the Del Taco restaurant at Mitchell Road and Whitmore Avenue reported a fight between two people.
As officers arrived, one of the two people drove away. Police gave chase for about a mile before the driver turned onto Belleza Court, where an officer performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique stop. In a PIT maneuver, an officer hits the back of a car to make it stop.
Within seconds, police said, an officer fired at the driver.
Sgt. Patrick Sullivan said he could not elaborate on why the officer fired or how many times Moreno was hit.
"Detectives are still in the middle of gathering information," he said. "They have a lot of people to talk to still."
Sullivan said he could not say whether more than one officer fired a gun, though a news release later issued by the Police Department indicated that one officer fired.
All officers involved are on administrative leave during the investigation, as is standard policy. "These situations are very stressful for all personnel involved; therefore, the identities of involved officers will be withheld until the situation stabilizes," the news release says.
Moreno will be booked at the Stanislaus County Jail when he is released from the hospital; Sullivan would not say what the charges will be.
Police have launched an internal investigation, and investigators from the Stanislaus County district attorney's office were at the scene. Both are standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.
