Merced County sheriff's deputies are investigating the suspicious deaths of two people in Winton.
Investigators said the deaths may be a murder-suicide. The cause of the deaths, however, hasn't been confirmed and the investigation continues.
Around 8 a.m. Wednesday a 15-year-old boy called 911 after finding his mother's body in her bedroom. An ambulance responded to the residence at 7305 Anne Circle, and personnel found the body of a woman, 44 years old, with trauma and obvious signs of foul play. Deputies responded to the scene and found the body of a 48-year-old man, next to the bed, in the same room, according to the sheriff's department.
A 13-year-old boy was also found alive in the house. The two teens are now in the custody of Merced County Child Protective Services.
Deputies haven't released the identity of the victims. Neighbors have identified them as Darryl and Christi McCarthy.
Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman, said he couldn't elaborate on the victims' wounds, in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Residents in the area expressed shock over the deaths.
Neighbor Tammy Bruley said her brother grew up with the male victim, who worked as a cabinet maker. Bruley said the victims were a married couple with two teenage boys. "We knew (Darryl McCarthy) for a long time; my brother went to school with him," Bruley said. "They were a very quiet family, very family-oriented. They went camping, boating and go-carting a lot."
Bruley said the boys enjoyed playing video games and often stayed inside. "It's just unbelievable. I feel so bad for the two boys," Bruley said.
