UPDATE - Authorities today released the identity of a man shot to death in west Modesto. Juan Gabriel Barajas, 32, of Modesto was found slumped over in the driver's seat of a car late Sunday night. He was shot at least once, police said.
People who lived next to the shooting scene on Vicksburg Street just off Paradise said they didn’t know Barajas. However, he was a regular customer at a market on Paradise Road.
An employee of the Carniceria Michoacan store said he came in a few days a week when not working as a house painter. He chatted with people in the store, often talking with pride about his 5-year-old son.
“Everyone knew him here,” the employee said. “He was friendly. … We don’t understand why this happened to him.”
An autopsy was conducted today, and police released Barajas' name after his family was contacted.
UPDATE - Police are asking the public's help in finding whoever is responsible for the killing of a man in west Modesto late Sunday night. It was the city's eighth homicide of the year.
Police Sgt. Rick Armendariz said detectives were following up on the case. No one has been arrested.
He urged anyone with information on the case to call police or leave an anonymous tip with CrimeStoppers.
A man was shot to death in west Modesto on Sunday night, authorities said.
Modesto police officers were called to the 1600 block of Vicksburg Street just south of Paradise Road at 11:29 p.m. after reports of shots being fired, according to Sgt. Rick Armendariz of the Modesto Police Department.
When officers arrived, they found a Latino man in a red car slumped over in the driver’s seat dead. He had been shot at least once, Armendariz said.
Police have not yet revealed the identity of the victim. An autopsy will be performed this morning.
There are no known suspects at this point, Armendariz said. Officers went door-to-door in the neighborhood last night and early this morning looking for information into the death.
Officers worked into the morning at the scene, although by 7 a.m., the area was cleared of any sign that a homicide had taken place on the tree-lined street that sits about two blocks west of James Marshall Park.
Armendariz said it was the city’s eighth reported homicide this year. There were 21 reported in Modesto in 2009.
Police ask anyone who may have information regarding this incident to please call Detective Jon Evers at 652-1995 or Crime Stoppers at 521-4636.
