A 37-year-old Modesto man was killed late Monday in a DUI crash on northbound Highway 99 between Ceres and Keyes. The driver of the car he was riding in is behind bars.
The crash was reported about 11:25 p.m. on northbound 99 south of Mitchell Road. California Highway Patrol officers and medical responders arrived and found the Modestan had died from his injuries and driver Jacob Anthony Hoggatt, 30, of Turlock, suffered minor injuries.
The investigation determined a 2005 International big rig was driven by Sonora resident Charles E. Marquardt, 64, north at about 55 mph. Hoggatt, in a 2001 Honda, approached the truck from behind at a speed "well in excess" of 55 mph and struck the left rear corner of the trailer, the CHP reported.
Hoggatt's car went out of control onto the east shoulder, hit a cyclone fence and continued across Rohde Road before coming to rest.

Marquardt reported no injuries, the CHP said.
Hoggatt was taken into custody by the Highway Patrol because he displayed signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the CHP report says.
All involved were wearing seat belts.
The name of the Modesto man killed has been withheld pending notification of family.
Hoggatt was in custody Tuesday morning, with bail set at $250,000. He faces charges of DUI causing bodily injury or death, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and probation violation.
He has prior convictions including burglary, vandalism and battery.
