A 25-year-old man remained in jail Tuesday after attacking an officer who tried to detain him Sunday, Modesto police said.
About noon, the officer was at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church on the 700 block of J Street. Police routinely patrol the area at the church's request, said Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves.
The officer saw a man and woman beneath a blanket outside the church. When the officer made contact with them, they were unclothed, Graves said. The man, later identified as Victor Alfonzo Hernandez, put on some clothing, and then gave the officer a false name, she said.
When the officer tried to detain Hernandez, the man fought, punching the officer several times, including in the face. Hernandez fled on foot but in a matter of minutes was found and arrested.
The officer was treated at a hospital and released, Graves said. The woman with Hernandez was not arrested.
Hernandez faces charges of battery on a peace officer, resisting arrest and probation violation. In a separate case out of Riverside County, he faces charges of manufacturing drugs or narcotics, possession of methamphetamine and resisting arrest.
