A Modesto man was in jail Monday, facing carjacking charges and with bail set at $150,000, after being arrested Saturday afternoon.
The crime occurred the evening of May 30 at the Emerald Pointe apartments, 301 Standiford Ave. just west of McHenry Avenue, police said. The victim was pulling into the driveway when approached by James W. Edmonds, with whom she was familiar, said police spokeswoman Heather Graves.
Edmonds asked for a ride, and when the victim refused, he pulled her out of the car, got behind the wheel and drove off, Graves said.
He apparently didn’t take it far. While the victim was being interviewed by police, other officers found the vehicle in the parking lot of the shopping center across Standiford that includes Target and JoAnn Fabrics, Graves said.
A neighbor of the victim’s also approached police with the keys to the vehicle and the victim’s cell phone. Edmonds had knocked on the neighbor’s door and handed over the items, Graves said.
Edmonds, 43, does not live in the apartment complex and is considered transient, Graves said. Officers could not find him in the area at the time of the crime.
A warrant was issued for Edmonds’ arrest, and a Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy located him Saturday, Graves said.
