A Sonora man originally arrested on suspicion of petty theft racked up several, more serious charges on the way to jail Thursday.
While being taken to jail, 55-year-old Robert Carl Anson made numerous threats to the arresting officer. The Sonora Police Department said the man made threats including, “I’m going to drop a bomb on this state, no, in fact, I’m going to bomb this police car.”
Anson is a registered arsonist and had failed to update his arson registration as required by his release conditions. Anson also admitted to starting a fire in a public restroom in Grigsby Park in Sonora.
Anson was booked on suspicion of numerous charges including criminal threats, false bomb threat to a peace officer, petty theft, failing to register and arson of property with a prior arson conviction. He is being held at the Tuolumne County Jail on $70,000 bail.
