The two people shot Sunday afternoon in west Modesto are a man and a woman who on Monday remained hospitalized with injuries that are not life-threatening, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department reports.
Initially, the woman got into a car to be driven to a hospital but then saw an ambulance approaching the scene so stopped, said Deputy Royjindar Singh, a department spokesman.
Investigation of the crime is being hampered by uncooperative witnesses and conflicting information, Singh said. “We had some suspect information when the call came out,” he said, “and everybody has said there were two bad guys,” but the descriptions of the suspects and what they were wearing differ enough it sounds like six different people.
“At least one of the two was armed,” according to witnesses, Singh said, “but we don’t know what led up to the shooting. Initially it was reported the subjects fled on foot, but later somebody said they left in a vehicle.”
The shootings occurred about 3:45 p.m. Sunday on the 100 block of Spencer Avenue. Names and other information on the victims have not been released.
Anyone with information about the shootings or the suspects is asked to call Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636 or email at www.stancrimetips.org or text a tip to 274637 and include “Tip 704” in the text.
