A 42-year-old Modesto man faces up to 11 years and eight months in prison for strangling the mother of his children, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.
A jury on Jan. 15 found Gustavo Contreras guilty of felony assault likely to produce great bodily injury, spousal abuse, making criminal threats and a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment. Deputy District Attorney Beth DeJong prosecuted the case.
On Oct. 19, Contreras strangled the woman until she was unconscious, prosecutors said. The couple’s 16-year-old son tried to stop Contreras, but the defendant threatened him. The woman told authorities that Contreras had hit her a few days earlier, causing bruising and injuring her finger.
Superior Court Judge Ricardo Córdova on Tuesday postponed Contreras’ sentencing until March 9. The defendant remains in custody at the Stanislaus County Jail.
