An Oakdale man was arrested Thursday afternoon on suspicion of killing 40-year-old William Chatman on Sept. 15 in the airport neighborhood of Modesto.
Abraham R. Martinez, 25, is being held without bail in the Stanislaus County jail, facing charges of murder, assault with a firearm and violation of post-release supervision.
About 5:20 a.m. Sept. 15, sheriff’s deputies and fire and medical personnel responded to a report of a man down at Mono Drive and South Santa Ana Avenue. Chatman was found lying in the roadway, with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to the Sheriff’s Department. He was taken to a hospital emergency room, where he died.
Witness interviews and evidence gathered led detectives to identify Martinez as a suspect.
Detectives and the sheriff’s SWAT team served three search warrants – two in Stanislaus County and one in Manteca – related to Martinez. According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department, the investigation led Special Team Investigating Narcotics and Gangs deputies to the Budget Inn & Suites on Hammer Lane in Stockton, where he was arrested about 4:40 p.m. Thursday.
Stanislaus County Superior Court archives show that in 2009, Martinez pleaded guilty to felony grand theft from a person, and in 2010 pleaded no contest to possession of a stolen vehicle and possessing, selling or manufacturing illegal weapons.
A GoFundMe account has been set up at www.gofundme.com/2ppaf2gk to raise money for Chatman’s funeral.
