Monday was the first day of autumn and, while it was hardly crisp outside, the high of 86 in Modesto as recorded by the Modesto Irrigation District was a degree less than the historical average temperature. And it was thankfully well short of the record high temperature of 101, reached in 1939. Indeed, first-day-of-fall weather has been all over the map – make that all over the thermometer – in this area. The Sept. 22 high in 2013 was 73 degrees, according to MID. That was two degrees higher than the record minimum high of 71 degrees, recorded in 1945. But in 2012, the high was 94, and in 2011, 95. Tuesday and Wednesday will see highs about the same as Monday’s, according to the National Weather Service. But Thursday, the expected high is 77 degrees, rising to 78 on Friday. Both days carry a slight chance of showers.
