A large crowd celebrated Mexican Independence Day on Monday at El Rematito Flea Market on Crows Landing Road in south Modesto. The celebration included live music, a presentation by an official from the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento, traditional Mexican folklorico dancers, and the crowning of a queen and two princesses to represent Comerciantes Unidos del Sur de Modesto (South Modesto Business United). Mexican Independence Day, observed Sept. 16, celebrates the nation’s freedom after 300 years under Spanish rule. The celebration also came at the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs through Oct. 15. It recognizes the contributions made by Latinos to the United States while celebrating their heritage and culture.
