Several thousand people are expected to celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Monday at El Rematito Flea Market on Crows Landing Road in south Modesto.
The celebration will include a Mexican marching band, a presentation by an official from the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento, traditional Mexican folkloric dancers and the crowning of a queen and two princesses to represent Comerciantes Unidos del Sur de Modesto (South Modesto Business United), as well as vendors selling a variety of food.
The annual celebration has typically drawn 2,500 to 3,000 people, according to organizers. Admission is free, but $5 raffle tickets will be sold. Prizes include a car, two flat-screen televisions, a bicycle and an iPad. The five young women vying for queen and princess will receive a portion of the raffle ticket sales to be used for their educations.
The event is from 5 to 10 p.m. at the flea market, 3113 Crows Landing Road.
Mexican Independence Day, observed Sept. 16, celebrates the nation’s freedom after 300 years under Spanish rule.
