Congregations Building Community is hosting a meeting Tuesday about a new state law that allows undocumented immigrants the chance to obtain a driver’s license. The law goes into effect New Year’s Day. The meeting is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 3824 Mitchell Road, Ceres. Officials from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, the Modesto Police Department and the Mexican Consulate will provide information. Congregations Building Community also will inform attendees about the state of immigration reform efforts nationwide. The group estimates about 39,000 Stanislaus County residents entered the country illegally.

Catholic Charities will present a free 13-week workshop, starting Monday, to help families learn nurturing parenting. The workshop, for ages 18 and older, consists of 10 lessons on topics such as how to promote healthy brain development in children, teens and parents; how to communicate with respect; and how to recognize and manage stress. Classes will meet at the Catholic Charities office, 400 12th St., Modesto, once a week from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Classes in English meet Mondays starting Monday. Classes in Spanish begin Tuesday. Call to register with Angie at (209) 529-3784, ext. 7084, or show up. Space is limited, however.
