Modesto firefighters rescued a couple on Sunday who had driven their car into an irrigation canal while leaving the McHenry Village shopping center. The husband and wife were not injured, and firefighters drove them home after freeing them from their BMW.

Modesto Fire Department Interim Chief Sean Slamon said the husband was trying to turn right onto eastbound Briggsmore Avenue, but drove past the eastbound lanes and was attempting to turn right into the oncoming, westbound traffic. Slamon said the wife tried to stop her husband and their BMW drove into the Modesto Irrigation District canal that separates Briggsmore’s east- and westbound lanes.

Slamon said the water in the canal was about waist deep. The couple, who appeared to be in their 70s, and their car were in the canal for about 15 minutes until firefighters rescued them using a ladder. The accident occurred about noon.
