Drivers in the Modesto Grand Prix, aka the Superkarts! USA SummerNationals, got their feel for the course on Friday. Occasionally, that meant a pretty hard feel, as one driver failed to negotiate a turn and slammed into the course wall.
With the temperature downtown peaking at 104 degrees in the 5 o’clock hour, there were only a few dozen spectators out for the practice runs, though their numbers rose as the sun went down.
Friday was the day to watch the superkarts at no charge. Tickets to the races Saturday and Sunday have been on sale in advance for $10, but they’ll be $15 at the gate.
It’s going to be hot out there again, with the National Weather Service predicting a high of 101 in Modesto today and 96 on Sunday.
The karts can reach speeds of 90 to 100 mph on the straightaways and can complete a lap on the nearly 9/10-mile course in as little as 40 seconds.
