A man driving a convertible Corvette west of Modesto on Monday crashed into a power pole and might have lost his thumb after his car rolled several times, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The car was driving north on Finney Road north of Beckwith Road at about 1 p.m. when it veered to the right and crashed into a power pole.
The Corvette continued north and rolled at least once, according to the CHP. The driver reportedly lost a thumb as a result of the crash.
The driver’s name and age were not available Monday afternoon.
The impact sheared the pole below the power lines, taking out a roughly 10-foot section but leaving the wires intact. The remainder of the pole hung from the slack wires.
Modesto Irrigation District employee Wade Wilkinson has repaired many power poles hit by cars but said it’s rare to see such a serious crash in which the lines are unaffected. He said he and his crew would replace the pole with the lines still “hot” and avoid cutting power to surrounding homes.
