A Valley Springs teenager suffered major injuries when her car went off the road and landed, upside-down, in the Calaveras River.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred Thursday; the time was not available. Janelle Lewis, 16, was driving a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee north on Hogan Dam Road.
As the car approached a turn in the road, Lewis lost control of it. The car went off the west side of the road near the bridge abutment. It went over a 20-foot wall before landing on its roof in the river, which had about three feet of water in it.
Lewis managed to get out of the car, but needed help from rescue workers to get out of the river. She was taken to the University of California at Davis hospital with major injuries.
